Used for investments and voting on proposed improvements to the NEO blockchain, NEO is one of two native tokens issued by the NEO Foundation; the other native token, GAS, is used to pay transaction fees. Launched in 2014 by Da Hongfei and Erik Zhang, The NEO Foundation (originally Antshares until its rebranding in 2017) builds and maintains a China-based blockchain ecosystem bolstering projects that aim to establish the blockchain as a mainstream alternative to Internet-based transactions.
