USD Coin (USCD) is a ERC-20 stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. It was launched in 2018 by Coinbase (a major fintech firm whose CEO is Brian Armstrong) and Circle (a money services company co-founded by Sean Neville and Jeremy Allaire) through their joint organization the Centre Consortium. US-dollar reserves backing the cryptocurrency are held in both cash and short-term US treasury bonds. The stability created through the tether is heightened by the status of Coinbase and Circle as fully regulated financial institutions with auditors continually assessing reserves. As dollars can be tokenized into USDC and USDC redeemed into dollars through the Centre Consortium, USDC is a fully fungible fiat stablecoin. USDC is secured by on-chain multiple-signature contracts, including a new consensus mechanisms, all aimed at facilitating everyday payments, commerce, and peer-to-peer transactions.
