What Is FileCoin?
Created in 2014 by American computer scientist Juan Benet, Filecoin (FIL) is a blockchain-based protocol designed to incentivize users of the Interplanetary File System (IPFS), a decentralized file-storage system. Benet has sought to create an alternative to cloud-storage systems, such as Amazon Web Services, that is free of middleman and censorship and that secure’s individuals’ access to their personal data. Mining and storing FIL, whose maximum supply is 2,000,000,000 FIL, earns block rewards on the system, which is secured through two mechanisms: proof of replication and proof of spacetime.
